Continuing my online illustration course
Continuing my illustration course by Adolfo Serra, I have opened a new world for myself – a world of art and creation. In the course, aside the illustration techniques, the teacher talks about his own influences in art. Among others, there are the French painter Toulouse-Lautrec (1864-1901) which was already described in one of my previous posts, and the Dutch/Netherlandish painter Hieronymus Bosch, also known as El Bosco (1450-1516).
Dutch/Netherlandish painter El Bosco
Today I would like to present you the painter Hieronymus Bosch (El Bosco) – one of the most notable representatives of the Early Netherlandish painting school. He painted generally with oil on oak wood. The paintings mainly contain fantastic illustrations of religious concepts and narratives.
Most famous and shocking painting
Here below are two YouTube videos about the most famous painting by the author ‘The Garden of Earthly Delights’. Choose one or watch both: first one is quite short who are always in hurry, but the second one is a masterpiece by itself. It is a well-done documental movie, almost 1 hour length.
From Heaven to Hell and Back in Hieronymus Bosch’s ‘Garden’

My favourite painter ever since I was 12. I learned about him in art class, where my art teacher showed us pieces of his work, bless her. I thank her even today for everything that she showed us. For me this tryptichon represents paradise on the left, earth in the middle and hell on the right. Earth is in the middle because it is the actions of people that can be good or evil, that determine which way humanity sways, and one might even say, which directions human souls go. We have a choice, to do good or bad. And all options are open to us. We create paradise or hell on this earth. I visited Madrid Prado museum in 2009 and I was roaming around enjoying the art, not realizing my favorite piece of art by Hieronymus Bosch is displayed there. I couldn’t believe my own eyes when I saw it. My Spanish friend explained that they call the artist el Bosco in Spain. I was so fascinated by my random find in the museum. I remember examining it and all its details very carefully for some time and not wanting to move on to other displays too quickly. I was so pleased to see it in real life, right in front of me.

I loved every minute of this detailed description of one of the most fascinating works of art ever painted. Besides the text and the editing I would especially emphasize the quality of the music which gives so much color and life to this documentary.
