Greek myth which inspired painters within the years / Prophylactic self-isolation series. Day 317th.

I came across the beautiful painting by John William Waterhouse  (1849–1917).

The painting is based on Greek myth. According to the myth, Hylas was sent to find fresh water during the journey with Hercules. He found a pond occupied by Naiads (nymph, female spirit in Greek mythology), and they lured Hylas into the water. He disappeared.

It seems that the most exciting legends and myths are re-created in paintings of numerous authors. This is valid for the Greek myth about Hylas and nymphs too.

Hylas and the Water Nymphs by Henrietta Rae, 1910
Young Hylas with the Water Nymphs by William Etty, 1833

While being naïve to look solely at the beauty, art criticists made their work, and here is how the beauty turns into deep harsh debates:

Hylas and the Nymphs is no masterpiece. But if it has to be removed from a gallery, will the nudes of Titian and Picasso be next? Gallery removes naked nymphs painting to ‘prompt conversation’

To remove this work art from view is not an interesting critique but a crass gesture that will end up on the wrong side of history. This censorship belongs in the bin along with Section 28’s war on gay culture …//

Clause 28 bans the “promotion” of homosexuality in schools as a “normal family relationship”.
